(Super)power to the People

Pow! Bang! Zap!

Superheroes and villains are the demigods of our time, capturing the public imagination by acting as symbolic stories that recapitulate general themes of the culture — Iron Man and Batman are figures of pure genius who overcome adversity with the power of the mind, Wonder Woman is a symbol of the indomitable feminine spirit, Superman and Captain America are the personifications of civic virtue, and so on.

Below are attempts to tie some popular watches to the super-personages that grace the pages of the comics:

1. Star Sapphire

Beside Sinestro, Star Sapphire is DC’s Green Lantern’s most implacable foe — and also the woman he loves. Star Sapphire’s look, as can be seen above, combines a feminine pink, curves, and the starburst motif with power and illumination. The Michele “Seaside” watch, combining those same elements, is a perfect match for the warrior-queen looking for something in her life that reads as both femme and powerful.

2. Emma Frost

Refined and frosty, Emma Frost has long teetered between antagonist and ally for Marvel’s X-Men. Originally known as the “White Queen”, Frost possesses the power to transform herself into solid diamond. With the same clean, smooth elegance as the self-styled White Queen, the Michele “Cape Chronograph”, as offered by Corinne Jewelers, is the perfect accessory for both a night out at the opera and directing a team of superheroes to fight a battle with Magneto for the fate of New York.

3. Pearl

Okay, so Pearl isn’t a comic book character, but as a founding member of Steven Universe’s Crystal Gems, she definitely qualifies as a superhero. Pearl, unlike Emma Frost, blends high femme class with a warrior’s aesthetic. The Citizen “L Ambiluna” matches Pearl’s slender grace, as well as the pale gem set in the center of her forehead; but made from steel and diamond, the watch is as deceptively strong as the Crystal Gem herself.

4. Superman

You can’t have an article talking about superhumans without invoking the “Big Blue Boy Scout” himself: Superman. It should be fairly obvious why the Michele “Deco Madison” watch above is the perfect watch for Superman fans in the audience — the blue of the face and strap, the red highlight, and the bold style that Michele packed into this piece all come together to make a timepiece fit for the Lady of Steel in your life.

5. Zealot

Zealot, one of the heroes of the famous 90’s series, WildC.A.T.s, is an immortal alien warrior-woman whose tremendous skills have been put towards defending her adopted homeworld against a sinister conspiracy by an enemy alien race. Beyond her famous silver hair, Zealot is known for her sword skills and bushido-like code of martial ethics. The Michele “Deco Mid” watch above bears both the silver and red associated with Zealot, as well as the warrior-scholar grace associated with her.

6. Silver Surfer

Maybe it’s cheating to associate the Citizen “Axiom” with Marvel’s Silver Surfer, but it’s impossible not to see why the comparison just writes itself: The herald to Galactus is just as elegantly polished as the timepiece itself, and both carry that quiet brand of masculine sturdiness that appeal to the men who surf the currents of the boardroom and those who surf the pages of comic books.
