Silicon.
That bit of facetiousness aside, silicone is something that Baume & Mercier has been embracing lately. The Richemont Group, of which Baume & Mercier is a member, has historically had a more conservative approach toward making mechanical watches. But in experimenting with silicon parts, Baume & Mercier joins with the Swatch Group in embracing this non-magnetic material.
Baume & Mercier parts are handmade by watchmaking workshops in Les Brenets, in the Swiss Jura mountain range. The oversight and passion invested in each spring that the workshops produce leads to a unique situation in which the designer’s timepieces are regarded with a scientific and engineering eye.
Men’s Watches
Baume & Mercier men’s watches make an interesting choice for a gift or a “starter luxury” timepiece, thanks to the surprising affordability that comes paired with the Swiss engineering and aesthetics of these watches. The clean gold and silver bezels of collections like Classima pair beautifully with the other piece of luxury that men usually wear: wedding bands.
Clifton Baumatic, a new collection from the designer, is a seriously rugged collection for a man who enjoys keeping his luxury timepiece on all the time. For instance, the magnetic field resistance of these watches is 25 times greater than the International Organization for Standardization benchmark. The 120-hour power reserve lends these pieces an extra level of reliability in any situation.
Women’s Watches
The interesting history of Baume & Mercier includes designing extremely thin movements, which, originally, was made to lighten bulky pocket watches, but came to benefit the design of thinner women’s watches. Today, any jewelry store that stocks timepieces will almost certainly offer the technical mastery of a B&M women’s watch.
No less technically masterful than the men’s watches, a Baume & Mercier women’s watch can be found in both automatic and quartz options, which means that the timekeeping mechanisms either work by way of mainsprings and gears set on a 21-ruby movement (that can be seen in motion when the watch is turned over); or by way of a battery. The former is well-represented by the Promesse line; the latter by the Hampton collection.
In either case, Baume & Mercier timepieces don’t require a lot of complex maintenance — the quality invested in these pieces means that a watch owner shouldn’t have to take their watch into a watch & jewelry repair center more than once a year.
