Luxury timepieces such as Omega, but also Breitling, Carl F. Bucherer, TagHeuer, and others have taken center stage in current cinema. As part of the cinema magic, the right timepieces allow for viewers to be transported into the era and general style of the films and television show they are featured in.
In a previous post, we discussed luxury grade timepieces in action films including Omega watches as seen in both Apollo 13 and James Bond flicks. Today, we decided to explore Omega further and its integral impact to both modern film and television.
Founded in 1848 by Louis Brandt in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, since its inception Omega has been crafting timepieces critical to some of history’s most important dates in space, in the sea, and on land. Omega has been the one of the most dependable
Dunkirk
Widely considered Christopher Nolan’s best film to date, the newly released Dunkirk stars more than just a few young British stars. In addition to big names such as Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, James D’Arcy, Kenneth Branagh, and the bevy of young hot actors including One Direction’s Harry Styles, Nolan’s Dunkirk features a classic Omega timepiece.
Worn on the wrist of RAF pilot Farrier (portrayed by Luxurious J & T favorite Tom Hardy), the Omage timepiece showcased multiple times in the film, an Omega CK2129, is indeed the watch handed to pilots in World War II. Thanks to its easy to read face, and its precision timing, this Omega classic was the ideal choice for its dependability and durability in the air.
La La Land
Part of this year’s “Best Picture” fiasco, La La Land’s success is in large part to the seemingly innocent charm of its protagonists. Avoiding many modern stylized garments and fine jewelry, instead the film features a colorful assortment of costumes to match their peppy songs and classic, vintage looks to add to the light drama.
An essential part of his retro casual look, the male protagonist, Sebastian (portrayed by the always dashing Ryan Gosling) sports a 50’s Omega timepiece throughout the film. No stranger to sporting luxury watches in his films, Gosling is said to be wearing another Omega classic in his collaboration with Terrence Malick, Song to Song and is set to play Neil Armstrong in his second partnership with La La Land director Damien Chazelle, where he will undoubtedly showcase Omega’s iconic Speedmaster, “the first watch worn on the moon.”
Westworld
To transport us into a dystopian, nihilistic future world, Westworld employs the help of Omega. Unlike the others featured, Westworld is a TV set in a nondescript future, but as part of the show’s mystery, the viewer is left with more questions than answers about the specifics of this world and its people. As such, a majority of the show’s costumes, props, and pieces featured in the “real world” of the show have a sleek, modern feel instead of drawing on an original, yet possibly problematic take on what the future might look like.
Featured on one of their protagonists, Bernard Lowe (portrayed by Jeffrey Wright), the Omega Seamaster watch is an integral part of Bernard’s day-to-day business ensemble. Assisting in giving Bernard his prim and proper, suit and tie look, the Seamaster watch offers a uniquely classic, but highly-stylized look. The bold complications featured on the face of the watch allow for a futuristic feel while still maintaining the elegance of a traditional Omega timepiece.
Spectre
Not to be dismissed, Omega and the Bond series have had a long and lasting fruitful relationship. Omega’s exquisite detailing and exceptionally handsome facade make for the perfect companion to Daniel Craig’s dapper version of 007. Highlighted throughout Spectre is Omega’s Seamaster 300, also known as their “Spectre Limited Edition.” While every piece from Omega’s endearing Seamaster collection is worth consideration, this particular watch is an updated version of a classic deep sea adventuring timepiece created especially for the 24th Bond film.
While a seemingly small piece of the art department puzzle, timepieces, in this case Omega timepieces, really elevate the look and feel of the film. The master craftsman at Omega continue to impress and make their mark on film and television today. We are no doubt going to keep on seeing Omega showpieces in films to come!
